William Balfour won’t leave jail too soon, as Illinois prison officials decided on Monday to keep the
estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, in custody for at least
three more weeks, while investigations in the Hudson multiple murder case continue.
The 27-year-old is the sole known suspect in the killings
and is due to remain behind bars for parole violation at least until a hearing
scheduled for December 3.
During a closed hearing in Stateville Correctional
Center in Crest Hill,
officials displayed evidence showing that William Balfour owned a gun similar
to the one used in the October 24 murders of the Academy Award-winning actress’
mother, brother and nephew, Jorge Montes, chairman of the Illinois Prisoner
Review Board told the Chicago Tribune.
Although prosecutors have not filed any murder-related
charges against William Balfour, who has served several years in prison, his
girlfriend said that she saw him carrying a gun that had the same features as
the weapon used in the three slayings.
Moreover, the board explained that the suspect had violated
parole by being present in places where drugs were sold. He has been on parole
for a couple of years, after being released from prison where he spent several
years for a 1999 attempted murder conviction.
If his parole is revoked by the board, William Balfour could
face another six months behind bars, until his sentence ends, in May 2009.
William Balfour admitted visiting the Hudsons’ residence on the morning of the
murders, the Chicago Tribune cited law enforcement sources as saying. The
bodies of Darnell Donerson and Jason Hudson were found last month at their Englewood home, while
Julia Hudson’s son, 7-year-old Julian King, was discovered dead three days
later in an abandoned SUV belonging to one of the victims.
