Now that Kathryn Faughey’s
killer has been identified and arrested, questions still remain on the terrible
incident in Upper East Side. After police detained David M. Tarloff, 39, from Queens,
known to have a history of mental problems, he appeared before court ten days
after the incident to be released until he will be asked to appear in court
again.
Mr. Tarloff has not been
previously charged with any other crimes, but now faces serious accusations in
the case of the New York City therapist’s killing. Other policies in the health
system could have possibly prevented Tarloff from committing the crime, but
that is just an assumption.
On February 1st, after attacking
a security guard at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway for not
being allowed to see his mother, the doctor who was asked to examine him
released him under the motivation that the man did not require further psychiatric
treatment.
The suspect had been dealing
with mental problems for many years, but no one knew he would ever go this far
to get revenge. Doctor Kent D. Shinbach diagnosed Tarloff with schizophrenia 17
years ago, and that was something Tarloff was decided to make him pay for.
The New York Times reports that
both his father and brother thought he would do something against Shinbach, but
nothing that could lead to a crime. “I think maybe he though, ‘If I have a
psychiatrist with me, they’ll let me see my mother,’ “Tarloff’s father said.
The murder suspect confessed
after his arrest that he blamed Dr. Kent Shinbach (who tried to help Faughey
when she got attacked) for having him institutionalized 17 years ago, and
initially went there to rob him, so as to later leave the country, accompanied
by his mother, whom he was planning to rescue somehow, probably by using Dr.
Shinbach.
The question that arises from
this is: could Tarloff’s lawyers plead for mental insanity in his defense? His multiple
commitments to mental institutions could support such claims, but that still
remains to be seen. For now, the suspect faces murder charges, but no bail or
restriction order has been set on his name.
