A 57-year-old physics teacher from Maine, Robert "Bob" Crowley, emerged as the winner of CBS' reality game show "Survivor" on Sunday's season finale beating 47-yaear-old hairdresser Susie Smith and 29-year-old Jessica "Sugar" Kiper.
After 36 days of surviving in the West African nation of Gabon and five consecutive immunity challenges wins, Bob Crowley, who once called the contest the most exciting adventure of his life took home the $1 million prize. When host Jeff Probst announced his name, Crowley said he was overwhelmed by the title.
"I just tried to play the game. My plan was to fly under the radar as long as I could, be necessary and be a nice guy so that people liked me," added Crowley, who received four votes from a seven-member jury made of former "Survivor" contestants. As the oldest "Survivor" winner ever, Crowley and 47-year-old Susie should inspire middle-aged viewers to try out for the CBS strategy-endurance game.
Addressing his fellow finalists, Crowley told them he played with his heart but also used his personality and survivor skills to make his and their lives better. "While I was here, I don't think I outwitted you. I don't think I outplayed you. The only thing I did was outlast you," he said.
Undoubtedly one of the smartest, most clever and most likable players of all time, Crowley was rewarded by the show's viewers with the fan favorite award, earning him an extra $100,000 to go along with his winnings.
Now $1 million richer, Crowley said he might return to Gabon in Africa with his wife, although he definitely wants to take her on a proper "honeymoon."
"We only got to spend four hours together in Gabon, and I would like to go back there with her and take her on a proper vacation," he explained.
