A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon has been taking excess body fat from his liposuction patients and using it to fuel his Ford SUV.
Craig Alan Bittner created what he called “lipo-diesel,” by sucking human fat from his patients in order to help power his vehicle, as well as his girlfriend's Lincoln Navigator.
The former surgeon admitted his activities, which are illegal, according to California state health officials.
Dr. Bittner wrote on his Web site, which has been shut down, that most of his patients actually required him to use their fat resulted after liposuction, for fuel “and I have more fat than I can use.” What's more, he added that, in this way, he was trying to be environmentally friendly and could have even saved the Earth. “Not only do they get to lose their love handles or chubby belly but they get to take part in saving the Earth," Bittner claimed.
The surgeon wrote on his former Web site that he performed roughly 7,000 liposuction operations, adding that a gallon of human fat will produce approximately the same amount of biofuel.
His illegal practice became public after several ex-patients filed lawsuits against him, saying that he let his girlfriend, who didn’t have a medical license, as well as one of his assistants to perform surgical procedures that resulted in patients being disfigured, according to Andrew Besser, attorney for three of these former patients.
The state medical board is investigating the case. It is unknown yet when Bittner started and stopped making his diesel from human fat or how he made it.
