In a move called the biggest promotional event in film history, over 150 million pairs of 3D glasses are to be given away so TV viewers can watch a trailer for Dreamworks' highly anticipated animated movie "Monsters vs. Aliens" which will air during the Super Bowl on February 1.
A commercial ad promoting the 3D trailer for "Monsters vs. Aliens" aired on NBC during Saturday night's telecast of the AFC Wild Card Playoffs between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers. ( The ad can now be found on YouTube.)
Hoping to spark even more interest in the flick, which hits theaters March 27, the special 90-second preview for "Monsters vs. Aliens" will be aired using 3D technology. NBC, the channel which broadcasts the Super Bowl final, has also scheduled a 3D episode of its comedy-drama series Chuck on February 2.
Similarly looking to the classic glasses with one side red and the other one blue, the new glasses are an updated version using Intel InTru 3D and ColorCode 3-D, DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said, refusing to disclose the costs of the campaign. This will be the first ever 3D trailer to air during a Super Bowl broadcast.
The glasses will be distributed free at Pepsi/ SoBe Life Water displays at 28,000 locations including grocery, drug and electronics stores and big-box retailers.
For those who will not be getting their hands on the magic glasses, Katzenberg said the technology allows those without to see an almost ordinary image on the TV screen. However, the experience will not come even close to the 3D quality moviegoers will see in theaters when the film opens.
Featuring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert, Kiefer Sutherland and Paul Rudd, the movie follows the adventures of a young girl who is hit by a meteorite from outer space and turns her into a giant monster. She is then taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. When a mysterious alien robot storms the Earth, the girl named Susan Murphy and the other monsters become the government's last resort on saving the world.
