Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin will certainly remember Thursday’s night game against the New York Islanders. Not only he led his team to rout the Islanders 8-1 in front of 19,319 fans at the Air Canada Centre, he also managed to score in the third period and break the franchise records for goals and points.
It was his 390th goal and 917th point with the Maple Leafs, improving on records set by Darryl Sittler between 1970 and 1982.
"My respect has grown every year as a player — for this city, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the fans," Sundin said. "Hopefully, it has grown the same for me."
It wasn’t a spectacular goal as it should have been in order to mark the feat. In fact it was a pass attempt and the puck caromed off the skate blade of Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt and past goalkeeper Wade Dubielewicz.
After Sundin scored, his team mates stood on their feet and banged their sticks against the boards and the crowd accompanied them on cheering for the Swedish captain. In fact, Sundin received cheers in the second period as well, when he was credited with an assist, but in the third period the crowd was informed that the assist had been mistakenly awarded.
Nik Antropov, Ian White, Tomas Kaberle, Matt Stajan, Alex Steen, Simon Gamache and Andy Wozniewski were the other scorers for the Maple Leafs. Wozniewski is at his first NHL goal. Stajan and Darcy Tucker recorded three assists each.
Leafs’ goalkeeper Andrew Raycroft had a great game as well as he made 30 saves. Te only one who managed to put it past him was Ruslan Fedotenko, who scored on a power-play in the first period.
"Mats is an all-star player and what he means to the Toronto Maple Leafs and the city…it is fitting for him to get that many goals and that many points," Islanders head coach Ted Nolan said. "He is a heck of a player."
