Sunday night
on HBO, a new TV show called “Summer Heights High” is scheduled to debut, the high
school comedy revolving around the stories of the three main characters, Jonah,
Mr. G. and Ja’mie. All of them are portrayed by the same actor, Chris Lilley,
who also wrote the screenplay for and produced the television series.
Jonah Takalua, a 13-year-old
school boy, is currently in Year 8 at Summer Heights High, which is the third
school he is attending, after he has been expelled from two others, for having
defaced the principal’s car and having set a colleague’s locker on fire,
respectively.
A bully and a major trouble-maker, Jonah risks expulsion
from this school, too, since he is always treating all his teachers, especially
his English one Ms. Wheatley, with a huge lack of respect, getting into
conflict after conflict with them.
Mr.G is a 36-year-old drama teacher at Summer Heights High
who’s convinced his true talent is being hindered by the musicals he has to put
on with his students, considering his own creations are far better than what
the schools proposes. His works include „You Can’t Skate, Mate,” a musical based
on Avril Lavigne’s song „Sk8er Boy” and „Ikea: The Musical.”
As for Ja'mie King, a private school exchange student, she constantly displays a snobbish
attitude towards all the other students, since she deems people attending a
public school as being dumb and inferior to those going to private schools.
“Summer
Heights High” was filmed in Melbourne
at Brighton Secondary
College, the TV series having
premiered in Australia
on September 5, 2007. It was
received with high acclaim by both critics and the public and also won a Logie
Award.
On March 26, 2008, the show was announced to have been sold for
international distribution to BBC Three (in the United Kingdom) and HBO (in the
United States).
