Another suicide bomb attack took
place in the city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan on Monday, when a military bus
transporting medical corps staff was destroyed by the conflagration. At least
five people were killed and 25 were injured, according to military and police officials.
The attack took place outside
the army’s National Logistics Cell, during the morning rush hour, when the
suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into the military vehicle, according to
one of the military officials at the scene.
The blast destroyed the doors,
windows and roof of the vehicle, and journalists arrived at the scene were
asked to maintain the distance from the wreck. The remains of the car were
covered with a white tent, while the police began the investigations.
Several other vehicles were
damaged in the blast on a 100 yards radius from the army headquarters,
witnesses reported. Ten of the injured victims are in critical condition,
according to city police official Basharat Abbasi.
The violence in Pakistan has
intensified in the past months, and the prospects of the February 18 elections
don’t look to good either. The suicide attacks targeting the towns and cities in
Pakistan have grown in number, adding up to a total of seven blasts in
Rawalpindi alone in the past months.
Other violent episodes included
a series of attacks targeting employees of the intelligence service agencies on
November 24, against a bus and an army checkpoint, killing approximately 35
people. None of the militants suspected for the attacks claimed responsibility
in neither case.
However, Pakistani authorities
have accused the Taliban militants near the border with Afghanistan for
starting a period of fear and insecurity across the country. The government holds
al-Qaeda lider Baitullah Mehsud responsible for the Bhutto attack and many
others in the country.
