Suicide Attack Targets German Convoy at Kabul Airport

One Afghan soldiers was killed and several persons were injured when a suicide attacker rammed his explosive-packed vehicle into a gate of the Kabul airport, security sources informed Friday.

The attack occurred early Friday and apparently targeted a German army convoy at the airport’s military section, government officials said. Three Afghan troopers and two civilians were among those wounded in the incident.

Four Belgian servicemen were also injured by the powerful explosion that jolted the premises, the Belgian Defence Ministry said. According to the statement, the four soldiers are part of the NATO mission providing assistance to Afghan troops stationed at the airport and suffered light injuries.

Reports from Kabul said the bomber was aiming to detonate his lethal charge when a convoy transporting German soldiers passed by, but missed the presumed target and blew himself up near a gate where a group of Afghan soldiers were stationed.

The vehicles composing the convoy were damaged by the fierce blast, but none of the German servicemen were injured or killed, a spokesman of the coalition forces announced.

Panic spread for a short while among civilians at the airport after the explosion occurred outside the facility’s perimeter. No further incidents were reported and activities continued at their normal rate.

Initially, no radical faction claimed responsibility for the attack. Later on, a spokesman of the Taliban rebels reportedly said one of their “hero mujahideen carried out the attack on the German troops when the enemy vehicle was driving near the Kabul airport.”

Again the insurgents contradicted the official reports, saying several German soldiers were killed.
