At least 13 people and 15 others were injured by a suicide
bomber who blew himself at a recruiting station in the Diyala province of Iraq on Thursday,
according to police.
The attacker wore a belt with explosives as he struck in the
town of Kanaan
12 miles of Baquba, the capital of Diyala province, Reuters reports. He
targeted a volunteer center connected to local public committees in Baquba.
According to Iraqi police, among the casualties there may
also be U.S.
forces.
They’ve also said that the number of casualties may rise.
The attack was also confirmed by Hassan Ahmed, a medic from
Baquba hospital.
He said: "The bomber blew himself up at the office
where volunteers had gathered to register themselves as members of the Awakening
group," AFP quotes.
The Awakening is a group that fights against al-Qaeda which was
formed with the help of the U.S.
military.
These kind of groups appeared in the Sunni region in Iraq. They have
the support of the American military in order to fight against al-Qaeda.
According to the U.S. military, almost 80,000 Sunni
Arabs and Shiites joined the Awakening movements by December.
Washington
said that due to this move attacks have decreased with 60 percent since June.
Still, the militants have targeted the patrols, mainly the
ones in the Northern provinces of Baghdad. Here al-Qaeda has
apparently regrouped after it was pushed from other parts of Iraq.
