Hollywood talent agent Sue Naegle has been chosen to replace Carolyn Strauss as the new head of HBO Entertainment, the network announced on Wednesday.
After being co-head of the television department at United Talent Agency since 1999, where she was responsible or packaging TV series such as "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood" for HBO, Naegle will now take over the premium cable network's top series-programming executive position.
"We just think it’s a perfect fit," said HBO co-president Richard Plepler and programming West Coast operations president Michael Lombardo in a statement. "Sue has great taste, superb relationships in the creative community and an innate sense of what makes a great HBO show. We are thrilled to welcome her into the family."
As the new president, Naegle, 38, who will take over her duties sometime this month, will oversee all series programming and specials for the Time Warner Inc. unit, and report to Lombardo. She is expected to blow new life into the HBO culture and, more important, to plot the channel’s next generation of hits.
"I am delighted to be joining the team at HBO," Naegle said in a statement. "I work in television, but I am also a great fan of television. At UTA, I was part of an amazing team dedicated to helping writers to fulfill their creative ambitions. HBO has always set the standard for excellence in programming and as the leading place for artists to do what they do best. The opportunity to be a part of that process from development to execution was something I could not pass up."
Over the past year, HBO has struggled with various changes in the management department, starting with the loss of CEO Chris Albrecht, who was forced to resign after being arrested in Las Vegas following a public altercation with his girlfriend.
Bill Nelson was named CEO, Richard Plepler was promoted to co-president of HBO responsible for programming and Michael Lombardo was named president of the programming group and West Coast operations.
"Series programming has long been at the heart and soul of HBO’s program lineup," Nelson said in a statement. "To bring in someone of Sue’s caliber to oversee a new generation of HBO programming is truly exciting."
