The investigation into the incident which occurred on the pane that landed in Khartoum and burst into flames was initiated. Authorities are currently trying to locate the passenger who fled the scene.
Investigators are trying to find out what caused the explosion aboard the Sudan Airways plane with 210 passengers. At least 28 people died in the blast, BBC reported. Authorities said the bodies were removed from the burnt fuselage of the Airbus A310 Wednesday, but more than 50 passengers weren’t accounted for.
The plane had taken off from Amman, Jordan and landed in bad weather at about 8 p.m. in Khartoum, but an engine exploded before the plane stopped, said the chief of the Khartoum International Airport.
After the engine exploded, the fire quickly spread to the cockpit and forward fuselage. Some passenger managed to escape the burning plane through emergency slides. Most of the passengers were Sudanese.
The pilots of the plane tried to land at Khartoum earlier on Tuesday, but couldn’t do so due to a sandstorm and heavy rain, the BBC reports. The plane returned later to Khartoum and landed at approximately 8 p.m.
At least 121 people survived the explosion and the following fire. Some of the passengers simply went home after the accident, without reporting to authorities.
