“The Devil Wears Prada” was one of the most successful movies of the past few years, being a box office hit and hitting record after record. It became a prototype of how fashion-related industries work, and Meryl Streep made Miranda Priestly the archetype of the boss people may find themselves working for at a fashion magazine.
Although highly entertaining because of the absurd tasks and situations, some of the movie’s scenes are not all together that far-fetched. Probably inspired by the book and the movie, reality show “Stylista” is trying to knock down rating records – but will it succeed?
The show is produces by Tyra Banks and will start airing today, Wednesday the 22nd, on CW network. The format of the show is quite simple: 11 contestants are fighting for a job at top fashion magazine “Elle”. These lucky 11 are Arnaldo, William Buckley, Danielle, Kate Gallagher, Megan, Devin, Ashlie Darrel, Johanna Cox, Dyshaun Burton, Jason and Cologne Schmitt. The show is in for some harsh reviews, as Tom and Lorenzo, the two guys who tear “Project Runway” apart, have promised a weekly review on “Stylista”.
It appears that Anne Slowey, one of Elle’s editors – fashion news director, took her job on the show seriously, while trying to mimic Meryl Streep’s magnificent performance as Miranda Priestly. She gave it up, however, while critiquing the teams’ work. So far, the critics seem to think that the catty remarks which are bound to be abundant in any reality show are the main reason you should tune in and watch “Stylista”. Moreover you have the perfect drama starters: Megan the rich girl, sensitive party girl Kate, a couple of narcissists and the over-competitive workaholic contestants.
