A recent study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience reached the conclusion that playing video games based on shooting action can improve eye sight. This is pretty much the exact opposite of what my mom used to tell me when I was a video-games hungry teen.
The study found that playing shooter-type video games increases the overall visual sights by about 20 percent. It’s not the first study which points out that video games improve eye sight. Two years ago, a study that had reached similar conclusions was discussed in Science Daily.
The research team involved in the study said the subjects who played video games improved their visual ability to even notice very small variations in shades of grey against a uniform background. This ability to have good eye sight and sensibility to contrast is very important in situations such as driving at night and reading.
This “contrast sensitivity” is exactly what video games train the eye of the gamer for, the study showed.
It seems that in this case, the brain plays a very important part in the process of improving eye sight. According to the findings of the study, the eye sight can be improved through training, a thing that most experts in the field are denying. Now, the Nature Neuroscience study says that a method of improving eye sight through playing video games could be soon implemented.
Improving the eye’s contrast sensitivity is usually obtained through eye surgery, glasses or contact lenses. The way involving video games sound a lot more fun.
