More than a hundred students at Galena Park
had to undergo tests for tuberculosis on Friday, after teen had became ill.
Health officials with the Harris County Public Health and
Environmental Services announced the testing after a student at North Shore
School was diagnosed with
tuberculosis just days before the Christmas break. The sick student was treated
now being able to return to school.
No other student has presented symptoms of tuberculosis,
according to Craig Eichhorn, Galena Park ISD’s communications director. Galena Park
has 1,957 students registered in grades 11-12.
Health officials have tracked 175 students who were close to
the student including classmates, friends, and participants in extracurricular
activities. They all were given a skin test on Friday. The county officials
will read the results of the tests on Wednesday.
Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium
tuberculosis that is spread in the air. Considered a deadly disease, tuberculosis
usually affects the lungs, but can also affect the spine, kidneys and brain two
to eight weeks after an infection. The disease spread when an infected person
coughs or sneezes. Tuberculosis can be prevented and treated with adequate
medications, a statement released by the school said. Symptoms of tuberculosis
include unintended weight loss, fatigue, a slight fever, night sweats, chills
and a loss of appetite.
