Student Shot at Mitchell High School in Memphis

Memphis police say a student has been shot in a cafeteria at a Memphis school and they already have one suspect in custody.
According to police spokeswoman, Monique Martin quoted by CNN, the student was shot twice Monday morning at Mitchell High School cafeteria where a course was being held.

The injured student was immediately taken to a local hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Rita Cooper, a spokeswoman for the school said the suspected shooter is in custody.

“A student was shot by a classmate in the cafeteria during a physical education class that was being held in that area,” Cooper said in a statement, according to local media sources.

Parents of students at the school were notified of the incident by the district’s automated phone alert system, Cooper said. Some parents are picking up their children at this time. The school is currently on lockdown and working to decide if classes will stay in session for the day.

No information was released about the suspect.

This is the second incident of this kind happened in Memphis schools this year. On February 4, a 16-year-old was shot in the leg inside a classroom during an argument with another student over music. The student suffered non-critical injuries and the suspected shooter was charged.

Incidents like this are rising on the U.S. school. Just last Friday, a female student killed two fellow students and then took her own life at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. The day before, a teacher from Portsmouth, Ohio, was stabbed by her husband Thursday morning in front of her students.
