A 23-year-old student at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana shot and killed two classmates in front of other 20 horrified students who were present in the in the class at the time. Then she turned the gun on herself and committed suicide.
According to Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Kelly, the victims were identified as Karsheika Graves, 21 and Taneshia Butler, 26, both from Baton Rouge, the Associated Press reported. The shooter was identified as Latina Williams whose address was unknown.
Officers answered a 911-call and arrived at the scene 4 minutes later around 8:36 a.m.
“About 8:36 a.m., we began receiving multiple phone calls from inside Louisiana Technical College...multiple calls from cellphones, saying shots were being fired, people had been shot. There was mass pandemonium, people running. One Officer – the first into the classroom – told me he could still smell gunpowder,” Kelly said quoted by the AP.
Police have not released any motive for the crimes yet. However, students had to remain in the classroom and were questioned by police. Classes were canceled through Tuesday and the investigation is ongoing.
The shooting at Louisiana Technical College came just hours after a gunman killed two police officers and three city officials on Thursday night when he stormed into a city council meeting in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. He was fatally shot by police later.
Also on Thursday, a man stabbed his former wife in front of her class at an Ohio school before fleeing the scene, stabbing another woman, and later committing suicide after a stand-off with police. Both women survived.
The worst incident of this kind happened in the American schools was last April, when a student with mental issues killed 32 people at Virginia Tech University before committing suicide.
