Strategy Analytics, a research company that tracks the
mobile phone sales in US, revealed that Apple’s ultimate gadget, the iPhone,
has become AT&T’s top selling device in Q3.
Apple released the iPhone on June 29 and according to the
data announced by AT&T in July in only two days the company has activated 146,000
of the phones. More than 40 per cent of those users were new AT&T customers,
AT&T added.
Also last month the research firm iSuppli said that in its
first month of presence on the market, the iPhone accounted for 1.8 percent of
all mobile handset sales in the U.S, meaning that more than 220,000 handsets
have been bought during summer’s hottest month. iSuppli’s data has been
gathered based on a survey of more than 2 million U.S. consumers. On September
10 Apple officially announced that one million iPhones were sold in only 74
days. Now Strategy Analytics has offered a new estimation.
The company said that, based on the data form is ProductTRAX
program nearly 1.1 million units were delivered to US consumers through the
combined AT&T and Apple outlets during Q3, totaling 1.325 million units
since the iPhone launch.
“The iPhone has become AT&T’s top selling device, commanding
some 13 percent of AT&T’s overall handset sales, and the 4th top selling
handset in the US market,” according to Barry Gilbert, VP of the Strategy
Analytics BuyerTRAX programs.
Streategy Analytics predicted that the iPhone could make it
the top selling device in the US
over the next 1-2 quarters. Currently Motorola’s RAZR V3 continues to be the
top selling handset in US.
Strategy Analytics also revealed some data about the iPhone
users. According to their report, the largest percentage of iPhone buyers is
between 20-30 years old, but the Ultimate phone is an attractive gadget for
older people. 25 percent of iPhone buyers were between 50-60 years, said
Strategy Analytics.
In order to boost the holiday sales of iPhone, Apple
announced last month a $399 price tag for the 8 GB version, instead of the
initial $499 price.
