On Saturday a section of the Newark
Liberty International
Airport was shut down due to a mysterious
smell that lead to a possible gas leak.
According to authorities, this event triggered the delay for
several hundred travelers, Daily News reports.
The odor was reported by Transportation Security
Administration workers near a security checkpoint in Terminal B around 11 a.m., Port Authority spokesman Pasquale
DiFulco said. Many employees and passengers become ill due to the smell.
Carmen Vargas, employee of Homewords Bound bookstore
situated near the gate said: "People were gagging. It brought tears to my
eyes and my nose clogged up.”
The whole area was closed and it was investigated by the
Newark Fire Department and Public Service Electric & Gas.
A spokeswoman for Public Service Electric & Gas, Robin
Rasheed-Hernandez, said that no natural gas or carbon monoxide in the air was
detected by utility workers.
The workers were scheduled to remain in the terminal the
whole afternoon as a precaution, Rasheed-Hernandez said
No gas leak was found so the section was reopened around 1:30 p.m.
A dozen TSA workers felt sick from the strong smell.
According to TSA spokeswoman Carrie Harman, two of them were
taken to the hospital to be treated for nausea and dizziness, and now were in
good condition.
The passengers that were at the scene were treated and
evaluated
The arriving flights were not affected by the shut down that
lasted two hours, because they were diverted to another part of the terminal.
Di Fulco said that three outband flights suffered delays.
The passengers from those flights were placed into buses and taken to adjacent
concourses.
Although the area was reopened, other passengers said that
the delays continued.
