Although power has been restored to most Brooklyn residents
who had lost electricity on Sunday, several hundreds are still without power.
Since Sunday evening, Consolidated Edison was working to
restore power to the Brooklyn neighborhoods, while the company’s officials
asked about 90,000 customers in Sunset Park, Borough Park, Park Slope and Bay
Ridge to cut back the use of electricity by turning off non-essential
electrical appliances until the problems are fixed. Unfortunately for the
residents, air conditioning is among those appliances.
Early on Sunday, 4 of the 12 feeders that provide
electricity for the areas mentioned above, stopped working, leaving about 2,000
homes and businesses in the dark. The cause of the failure probably was
overheating or overloading of the underground electrical system that works in
the area, said Michael S. Clendenin, a spokesman for Con Edison.
“Many times the heat, as it builds up underneath the ground,
will often cause pieces of electrical equipment to fail,” he said.
Many residents complained they could hardly sleep or breathe
because of the terrible heat. Supermarkets complained they lost profit, as some
of their products, such as meat, got ruined.
Clendenin said that crews from Con Edison were working hard
to replace the distribution lines that were destroyed when the feeders
malfunctioned.
Even when the power returned, many appliances did not
function as usual, due to the fact that Con Ed reduced voltage in the area by 8
percent to prevent the power failure from occurring in other areas as well and
to allow the workers repair the electrical lines. The company also handed out
dry ice to customers to help them keep their food cold.
