Still No Confirmation On Microsoft's Acquisition Of Powerset

The news about the upcoming deal involving the $100 million purchase of Powerset by Microsoft seem to have multiplied in recent days. The rumors say that the acquisition will be made next month and it won’t be long until both parts will release an official statement on the issue.

Powerset is a San Francisco-based company, founded in 2005 by Foundation Capital, Founders Fund and Paperboy Ventures which is best known for its search engine experience developed for Wikipedia. The technology offered by the company provides a much better search process, starting from the expended search options and ending with the far more accurate results. Wikipedia is considered only the starting point, as the company plans to direct its product offerings and features in many other directions.

The best Powerset activity can be experienced using Safari 3, Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7.

The Powerset company managed to raise in November 2006 close to $13 million in venture capital and the figures point out that this might turn out to be a good move for Microsoft, after its big plans with Yahoo turned cold. Microsoft had several attempts to close an agreement with Yahoo and at a certain point decided that it was no longer interested in closing the deal.

Yahoo also released a statement claiming that its board of directors reached the conclusion that such a deal involving Yahoo’s search business would not be, after all, in the company’s best interests, as it would ruin many of its upcoming strategic plans revolving around the independent search feature.
