Despite the six-month leave of absence from Apple of Steve Jobs, he is definitely not planning on taking a vacation. Jobs still owns the largest number of shares at Disney, and now stands for re-election in the company’s Board of Directors.
The announcement should not come as a surprise if we take into consideration Jobs’ own words that he will continue to remain involved in major strategic decisions during this absence. But, after admitting that his health-related issues are more complex than (he) originally thought, the curiosity over how Jobs will fulfill his role at Disney grows.
Steve Jobs was nominated for re-election as Disney Director, and has consented to serve if elected. He became a member of the board in May 2006, when Disney purchased Pixar. According to Disney’s proxy statement, Steve Jobs receives no compensation (at his request).
But will he be able to fulfill his duty? According to the proxy, directors need to dedicate a minimum of 250 hours per year to their position with the company. Furthermore, Jobs attended at least 75 percent of last year’s meeting, and since he agreed with the nomination, it means we haven’t heard the last of Jobs.
The media has turned the Apple CEO into a dying man, but perhaps Jobs just needs to take some time off from some elements in his life. This doesn’t mean he will lay down and die, it just means he will have more time to focus on his health problems. After all, I don’t think his job as a Disney director takes as much time as the Apple CEO position does.
