“The Office” and “Get Smart” star Steve Carell will reportedly star in "The Beaver," the story of which focuses on a man who wanders about with a beaver puppet on his hand and treats the puppet as a human being with genuine human feelings.
The script, which was written by Kyle Killen and generated a lot of buzz in some Hollywood circles, was picked up by indie producer Anonymous Content. The producer is seeking a director and "Austin Powers" director Jay Roach’s name was linked to the project, although it seems a long shot.
“The Beaver” story occupies the fantastical territory somewhere between "Being John Malkovich" and "Lars and the Real Girl." Although many studios are interested in buying it, Anonymous won’t sell until they got a director.
Carell is currently involved in several projects and has some more to choose from for the spring. He could get involved in his hiatus from NBC's "The Office." The Golden Globe- and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning American comedian, actor, producer and writer could also work on "Get Smart 2" and the Napoleonic comedy "Brigadier Gerard."
According to several industry critics, the Kyle Killen script is very good as it features a combination of humor, whimsy and heart. However, the last ingredient needed to turn this into a major hit is a very talented and charismatic actor such as Steve Carell.
