Stephenie Meyer, the author of the best-selling “Twilight”
books about vampires, has announced she would postponed indefinitely the fifth
part of the series, after a partial draft of the installment was illegally
posted on the Internet.
Meyer, who wrote “Twilight” and its sequels “New Moon,
“Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn,” said she had a good idea about how the book was
leaked on the Internet, as she only had a few copies of “Midnight Sun” and each
one was different. But she refused to give names or any more details about the
matter, and said she did not think the person who contributed to the leak had
bad intentions.
“The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the
Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment
beyond that, as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial
distribution,” she wrote on her website.
However, she said the event upset her terribly, as she felt
her rights as an author as well as a human being were violated, as she was the
only one who owned the copyright and the book could not be legally released
without her permission.
Meyer said she hoped that this experience would leave her
fans “with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic
control.”
We don’t know whether the fans were left with this
understanding, but they were surely angry and disappointed by the author’s
decision.
After Meyer said that she was too sad about what happened to
continue working on the book, fans all over the world went crazy and started
signing petitions to convince the best-selling writer produce the last book of
the series.
“Midnight Sun” tells the love story of a human teenager
named Bella and her vampire lover Edward, from the latter’s perspective. Well,
a perspective that the fans will never get to know, apparently, if Meyer
doesn’t change her mind.
