Renown U.S. writer Stephen King took aim at equally famous “Twilight” series author Stephenie Meyer in a recent interview with USA Weekend mocking her writing skills.
While “Twilight” fans will certainly disagree and take offense at King’s remarks, the horror novelist said Meyer is not “very good” and “can't write worth a darn.”
Asked about Meyer, King compared the new best-selling writer with British author of the “Harry Potter” series, J.K. Rowling, saying that even though both speak directly to young people, “the real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good.”
However, King did note that Meyer’s stories are appealing - if you're a girlie-girl. “People are attracted by the stories,” he explained. “It's very clear that [Meyer is] writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It's very exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because they're not overtly sexual.”
Whether he is right or not, it does appear that the choice of his words was way harsh especially coming from someone who writes for adults, while Meyer clearly addresses a young adult audience.
“A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all the feelings that they're not ready to deal with yet,” he continued.
