Steel from New York's World Trade Centre has been transformed into a cross and sited close to the place where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field on September 11, 2001.

On Saturday, the 14-foot high monument, which weighs almost 2 tones, was carried from New York to the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Co. After travelling 311 miles, the cross was placed there, a few miles distance from the place the jet crashed.

About 140 motorcycle riders followed the cross, which was engraved with “9-11-01” and adorned with a bronze commemorative inscription reading “Never Forget.”  Paddy Concannon, a retired lieutenant from the Fire Department of New York, stated: "This is an effort on our part to tie the three events together: the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville.

According to Shanksville Fire Chief Terry Shaffer, whenever his volunteer firefighters will pass by the monument, they will be reminded of the brave acts carried out on Sept. 11, when they hurried to the site of the air crash in order to look for survivors.

"They're Smalltown USA, but they have the biggest hearts," stated Rich Snyder, a retired firefighter from the Official Fire Department City of New York.

At the ceremony held Sunday morning, hundreds of people prayed and sang in memoriam of the victims.
