A new search engine called Cuil launched on the market, and
this time, it might make a difference. The guys behind Cuil, which is
pronounced like 'cool,' are former Google employees.
One of them, Anna
Patterson is one of the persons that worked directly at developing the
algorithms that Google uses to provide its relevant results.
Cuil claims that it has a Web index three times the size of
Google, but it is rather hard to say whether they are right or not, since
Google hasn't made public its Web index size for some time now. Even though
this means that using Cuil will allow you to see results from more web pages
than any other search engine will, it could also mean that there will be more
junk information as well.
What Cuil has that really makes it special and possibly
better than Google, is the way it indexes search results. Unlike Google, that
looks at the number of links that point to a page in order to determine how
relevant it is, Cuil tries to understand what the information on that page is
all about, as well as the context in which it is presented.
According to its
founders, Cuil also understands what people want to search for based on the
keywords they use. This way Cuil supposedly doesn't search just for that keywords,
but also for the meaning of the text that was entered.
While some experts think that Cuil is the most revolutionary
product of its sort in quite some time, few people think that it could really
compete with Google as far as market share is concerned.
The two main obstacles
that stand in Cuil's way to stardom, are its competition's immense financial
power, as well as people's habit of conducting searches with the same search
engine that they've used for years.
