The political rhetoric and the best of what entertainment industry had to offer mixed together like stars and stripes do on our nation’s flag at the inauguration concert held in front of Lincoln Memorial to mark the United States first black president.
The celebration followed Obama’s whistle-stop tour, from Philadelphia to Washington, the same route Abraham Lincoln took in 1861.
President-elect Barack Obama and his family apparently had a great time. They were accompanied by Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his wife. The high-ranking officials with their families were seated in a glass-walled booth on one side of the stage and they enjoyed the celebration which lasted for about 2 hours. They had a great time and it would have been hard not to considering the fact that the show featured the best pop culture had to offer.
The list of actors and singers included Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Usher, will.i.am, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, James Taylor, Garth Brooks and Pete Seeger.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden each took the stage and held a brief speech. The speeches referred mainly to the anxiety throughout the United States and both promised a better future. Obama underlined the fact that the current generation is among the few to face such “serious” challenges.
“I stand here today as hopeful as ever that the United States of America will endure, that the dream of our founders will live on in our time," the President-elect stated. Obama will take office tomorrow.
Bishop V. Gene Robinson, an openly gay Episcopalian, gave the invocation. Conservative evangelical Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Orange County, will give the prayer at the president’s swearing-in tomorrow, January 20.
Bishop Robinson advised the hundred of thousands of people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate the 44th U.S. President not to look at Barack Obama as a messiah and not forget that he is a human being.
Probably the most worth-mentioning remark of the celebration ceremony belonged to Bono, U2’s lead singer, who said that the fact that Obama was elected was not just the American dream come true, but also the Irish dream, a European dream, African dream, Israeli dream and also a Palestinian dream. U2 performed one of its greatest hits: "Pride (In the Name of Love)," which is a paean to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. whose commemoration day is tomorrow.
To celebrate the MLK day, the Obamas will take part in a community renovation project in the Washington area. Vice President-elect Joe Biden will also take part in volunteer service on Monday, but details about the projects were not released by administration aides.
