Hollywood
will finally get to see some glamour this year as the Screen Actors Guild
Awards will be held this Sunday with a promise from the Writers Guild of
America that there will no picket line outside the event.
After weeks of writers’ strike, which paralyzed the film
industry and the Golden Globes, this weekend we will be rewarded with red
carpet stars wearing stylish outfits, giving away awards, and we will hear those
speeches that we’ve missed so much at the Globes.
Every year the Screen Actors Guild gives out awards for
performances in five movies and eight television categories thus giving a hint for
the possible winners for the Academy Awards due February 24.
Among those present to give away awards will be Tom Cruise,
Russell Crow, Kate Hudson, John Travolta, Matthew McConaughey and Forest
Whitaker. Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett are some of the
nominees that will dress up for the red carpet parade at the Shrine auditorium
in Los Angeles.
So what if we had the Golden Globes transformed into a press
conference and the People's Choice Awards into a pre-taped video clip show, we
will quench our thirst for stars this Sunday.
How did SAG awards got away with it? Well, since the SAG has
been a support for the WGA in its conflict, the WGA allowed the scribes to work
for the SAG awards as a return favor.
So far the Oscars didn’t receive any kind of a deal, so
there are doubts that the biggest show in the movie industry will still go on.
The winners for the SAG awards will be chosen by almost
100,000 members from the actor’s union and will give indication for the Oscar laureates.
For the category for best actors, Daniel Day Lewis and Julie
Christie with their roles in "There Will Be Blood," and "Away
From Her," are favorites to take home the SAG award.
Best supporting actress’s favorites are Cate Blanchett with
her portrayal of Bob Dylan in “I'm Not There,” and Tilda Swinton for her role
in the thriller "Michael Clayton."
The most nominated movie at the SAG is Sean Penn’s “Into the
Wild” with four nominations.
Performances by a cast in a movie, which is the top award at
the SAG, includes the cast from: “3:10 to Yuma,”
the musical “Hairspray,” crime thriller “American Gangster” and “No Country for
Old Men.”
The television nominees for the best TV drama ensemble cast
are The Sopranos," "Boston Legal," "Grey's Anatomy,"
"The Closer" and "Mad Men
Best comedy cast nominees are for "Entourage,"
"Desperate Housewives," "30 Rock," "The Office"
and "Ugly Betty."
