Starbucks has ended today a long-time partnership with
T-Mobile and announced that beginning with this spring, AT&T will be the
new provider that will offer Wi-Fi connectivity for consumers in more than
7,000 Starbucks locations in the U.S.
The customers who will buy the Starbucks purchase card will receive
two hours of free wireless access. Those who want more than two hours have two
options.
They could buy another additional two hours for $3,99 or a
monthly membership which costs $19.99 and includes access to any of AT&T's
70,000 hot spots in 89 countries around the world.
However, thanks to an agreement between T-Mobile and
AT&T T-Mobile HotSpot customers will be able to continue to access Wi-Fi
services at no additional cost, Starbucks explained.
“Now more than ever, Starbucks is focused on the in-store
experience for our customers,” said Chris Bruzzo, chief technology officer,
Starbucks. “As we continue to build our technology offerings in ways that both
enhance and expand the Starbucks Experience for our customers, we made a
strategic decision to expand our existing relationship with our longtime technology
partner AT&T to include consumer Wi-Fi.”
The AT&T broadband and AT&T U-verse Internet
customers will have unlimited free access to the Wi-Fi service.
As an added benefit for the more than 100,000 Starbucks
partners in the U.S.,
all Starbucks partners will receive free AT&T Wi-Fi accounts allowing them
to use the network in Starbucks company-operated locations offering Wi-Fi access.
Last month, with the stock dropping and the competition
breathing in its back head, Starbucks Coffee decided to bring back Howard Schultz
as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Schultz, founder of Starbucks has replaced
Jim Donald, with the goal of battling the weakening sales of the U.S. coffee
shop chain.
