Star Tenor Jerry Hadley Attempts Suicide

Opera singer Jerry Hadley is on life support after he reportedly attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head with an air riffle, Police said.

The 55-year-old Grammy and Emmy award-winning tenor was found unconscious with a gunshot wound, lying on his bedroom’s floor, Tuesday morning when authorities responded an emergency call, Robert Rochler, a senior investigator with the New York State Police, said.

Hadley, who has been struggling with his career and financial situation, was rushed to St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Poughkeepsie, where neurosurgeons determined that he suffered severe brain injuries, investigator Rochler said on Wednesday. The tenor’s condition is scheduled to be evaluated in order "to determine if he is to remain on life support."

According to Rochler’s statement, the investigation revealed that Hadley had filed for bankruptcy and was undergoing treatment for depression. In May 2006, he was arrested in Manhattan on a charge of driving while intoxicated, but prosecutors later dropped the case.

Hadley was last seen performing in May this year, according to Celia Novo, who was speaking for Hadley's ex-wife, pianist Cheryll Drake Hadley, and their two sons.

"He was performing up until recently," Novo said Wednesday. "I saw him 10 days ago, and everything was fine."
