Stan Winston, the special-effects artist who created the
visual effects in movies like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park
or Aliens has died at age 62.
According to a spokesperson from Stan Winston Studios, the
artist died after in the past seven years he had struggled with multiple
myeloma.
Stan Winston has studied sculpture and painting and he
initially intended to pursue a career as an actor. However, when he moved to Hollywood in 1969, he
started to work as make-up artist at Walt Disney Studios under the direction of
Bob Schiffer.
Three years later, he decides to establish Stan Winston
Studios and in 1972 he has won an Emmy for his work on “Gargoyles”.
During 1973 and 1979, Stan Winston received five more Emmy
nominations and in 1981 he earned his first Oscar nomination for “Heartbeeps.”
However, Stan Winston will become truly famous after his
special-effects work for Cameron’s 1984 movie “The Terminator”. Two years
later, he received his first Oscar for “Aliens”, directed also by James
Cameron.
During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Stan Winston has
created the special effects for movies like “Edward Scissorhands”, “Predator”,
“Alien Nation”, “The Monster Squad”, and “Predator 2”.
In 1992 he wins two Oscars for “Terminator 2: The Judgment
Day”. In 1993 he earned his third Oscar for his work for Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park”.
The latest movie is which Winston was involved is the recently released
“Iron Man” for which he created the costumes. Stan Winston is survived by his
wife and his two children.
