Sylvester Stallone, currently gracing the box office charts with his new action hero film “Rambo,” has inked a deal with the movie’s producers to direct and star in two more action films.
“Rambo” producers Danny Dimbort, Avi Lerner and Trevor Short of Nu Image/Millennium Films, have signed a deal with the veteran actor to direct and star in two films, the Hollywood Reporter says.
The team is already considering several scripts for follow-ups to his hit sequels to “First Blood” and “Rocky.”
Stallone outdid himself in 2006, when he wrote, directed and starred in “Rocky Balboa,”
the sixth “Rocky” film, 16 years after the previous sequel in the franchise. His co-stars were Burt Young and Milo Ventimiglia.
Released via MGM, the film went on to gross $70 million on an estimated $24 million budget.
As for the current “Rambo,” written and directed by Stallone who also stars as the heroic Vietnam War veteran John Rambo, the Lionsgate release made $18.2 million in its opening weekend and earned an estimated $25 million in its first 10 days of release.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, with Nu Image/Millennium's new Writers Guild of America interim deal speeding up the process, the first script is expected to be ready by the fall. Production is set to begin shortly thereafter.
Stallone will produce the films with Kevin King-Templeton and Lerner. Dimbort, Short and Boaz Davidson will serve as executive producers, the same source informs.
“The past year and a half of working with Avi, his partners Danny and Trevor and his film family has been nothing but a high point for me and my career and an extremely rewarding experience,” Stallone told the HR. “Avi is a real gentleman and a man of his word.”
Stallone told Reuters over the weekend that he is also considering a “Rambo 5.”
“It will depend on the success of this one, but right now I think I'm gearing one up. It will be quite different. We'll do something a little darker and a little more unexpected.”
