About 30 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and five soldiers
lost their lives in a new fight which took place in northern Sri Lanka. According
to the United Press International, the military's Media
Center for National Security said the clash
happened on Monday and seven rebel bunkers were destroyed in the Mannar,
Vavuniya Welioya and Jaffna
regions.
This fight comes after other clashes which occurred in the Sri Lanka civil
war. The country is dominated by sea battles, bomb attacks or air strikes, causing
many victims, many of which are civilians.
Other fights ended with 70 rebels and 24 soldiers injured.
Monday was also the day when a bomb exploded in a village,
located in a government controlled area, and killed three police officers.
Authorities said that they suspected Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack.
Even though the government said last year that all the
rebels were removed from the country’s Eastern Province,
there are still some operations that ambush the army and police. The northern
region is the one with the ongoing attacks.
The civil war began in 1983 when the Tamil Tigers wanted to
create and independent homeland for the Tamils, an ethnic minority who has been
ignored by the government for years. The government is controlled by the majority
ethnic Sinhalese.
