Square Enix’s CEO Yoichi
Wada thinks Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are too complex for gaming and Nintendo
DS is the ideal platform at least for Square Enix games.
In an interview with Financial Times Wada defined the two
gaming consoles as “over-engineered”.
"There are too many specs--and you also need a
high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of
gaming--these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two
years, they will fare better." he explained.
From the beginning, Microsoft and Sony positioned their gaming
consoles as entertainment hubs that can be used not only for playing games, but
also for playing music and movies, connecting to Internet and other activities.
Instead Nintendo has marketed its DS console as simple
device aimed to all kind of people, gamers or non-games, with a price tag
affordable to anyone.
Square Enix announced this year that Dragon Quest IX, the
latest instalment in its successful franchise, would only be produced for DS
machine.
“We chose the Nintendo DS because the widest array of people
use it, including people who previously did not play games before,” said Wada.
