Wireless carrier Sprint announced that a wireless laptop modem with both 3G and WiMax capabilities will be available in a few days. The company stated that the dual mode U300 mode’s performance is set to make “wireless history.”
The modem will be offered starting December 21 and will have a $149.99 price tag with two-year compliant subscription, after a $50 mail-in-rebate. Sprint offers the 3G/4G data plan for $79.99. While it may be $20 more than the typical broadband connection, the modem will always provide the best connection between 3G and WiMax.
Sprint chose WiMax as their 4G network and offered it for the first time in September 2008, when the company made it available in Baltimore. The wireless carrier announced that it plans to broad its WiMax network across the United States in 2009 and is already taking preorders in Portland and Oregon.
A 4G laptop modem was previously available and it offered impressive performance but once you leave the 4G coverage area, the modem loses is of no use. The U300 Modem from Sprint promises to offer the best out of the two worlds, as it will offer 4G broadband connection whenever it is available and stick with the 3G network for the remainder. This is good news, because 3G networks cover almost the entire country at the moment.
