Sprint Nextel Improves Its Broadband Services

Sprint Nextel announced the team up with several new partners which will improve its XOHM WiMAX wireless broadband service.

The plan is to add more location-based partners in order to provide more details about the events taking place everywhere. The new deals include Yelp, a business review Web site; Topix, a local news site and Eventful, a local events guide done by map views.

Each company adds something different to the data mix, as Yelp Inc. will offer access to more than 3 million of its reviews; Pennsylvania-based AccuWeather will offer three-day local forecasts; Autodesk Inc. will offer details on addresses; Google will open up its Google Maps; San Diego-based Eventful Inc. will provide info on many local events in map view, and so on.

"The XOHM mobile broadband experience will be largely location-centric," said Rick Robinson, vice president of XOHM Services, in a statement. "We're creating a new dimension to online presence, making points of interest near your current location easy to identify and access. This 'geobrowsing' effect provides location context and will give XOHM members a richer personal broadband experience when they're mobile."

The WiMAX service provides location and personalization features, helping users with information on businesses, weather, traffic and entertainment. All the data can be accessed on WiMAX-capable devices such as laptops, media players, car navigation systems, media players and so on.

The WiMAX technology demanded back in 2006 a $5 billion investment and the companies involved in the project include Google, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Bright House Networks.
