Responding to angry complaints from his fans over the handling of ticket sales for his upcoming concert tour, Bruce Springsteen posted a letter on his website blasting Ticketmaster for redirecting its customers to the company's secondary ticketing site, TicketsNow, which sells seats at a premium cost.
Tickets for the Boss’ show at the Meadowlands went on sale Monday, but when fans attempted to purchase tickets to the concert, they bumped into an error saying the tickets sold out and were directed to much more expensive and readily available tickets on TicketsNow reseller subsidiary.
Fans recognized the scam and flooded Springsteen with complaints prompting him to notify Ticketmaster and address the issue in an open letter written by Springsteen and his manager Jon Landau.
“The abuse of our fans and our trust by Ticketmaster has made us as furious as it has made many of you,” Springsteen said in the lengthy letter to his fans.
“We perceive this as a pure conflict of interest,” the post continued. “Ticketmaster is there to ensure that we have a good, fair sale of our tickets at their face value plus normal ticketing charges. TicketsNow is supposed to be a secondary site where people who already have tickets may exchange, trade, and, unfortunately, speculate with them. We have asked this redirection from Ticketmaster to TicketsNow cease and desist immediately and Ticketmaster has agreed to do so in the future and has removed its unwanted material from their and our site.”
Responding to Springsteen’s letter, Ticketmaster CEO Irving Azoff issued an apology to the rocker, his manager and the entire Springsteen Tour Team, admitting they could have handled the situation better.
Providing an explanation for the redirection of fans to TicketsNow, Azoff said the company simply tried to serve their customers by offering them more choices when the tickets they requested from the primary on-sale were not available.
“Fans are confused and angry, which is the opposite of what we hoped to accomplish. We sincerely apologize to Bruce, his organization and, above all, his fans,” Azoff said.
