Rock icon Bruce Springsteen is paying tribute to a New
Jersey boardwalk fortuneteller he made famous in a
song decades ago.
Madam Marie Castello used to tell passers-by’s fortunes on
the Asbury Park Boardwalk in New Jersey
but she will do this no longer, as she passed away recently. She was 93.
Bruce Springsteen posted an emotional message on his
official website, remembering the iconic boardwalk presence with fondness.
The veteran singer wrote about Madam Marie in his 1973 song
“4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy),”
off his second album “The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle.”
In a posting on his website, Bruce Springsteen remembered
always seeing Madam Marie at the Temple
of Knowledge.
“I’d sit across from her on the metal guard rail bordering
the beach, and watched as she led the day-trippers into the small back room
where she would unlock a few of the mysteries of their future,’ he wrote.
“She always told me mine looked pretty good — she was right.”
The post ends: “Over here on E Street, we will miss her.”
This is a second death of someone he was fond of Bruce
Springsteen has had to cope with this year, after longtime collaborator Danny
Federici passed away on April 17, aged 58. Federici, original member of the E
Street Band, had been playing music with Bruce Springsteen since the 1960s.
It was Federici and original E Street Band drummer Vini
Lopez who first invited Bruce Springsteen to join their band.
“I loved him very much...we grew up together,” the singer
wrote on his website at the time of his friend’s death.
