Director Spike Lee plans to film the July 19 production of
award-winning Broadway show “Passing Strange,” one day before it closes, for an
upcoming big screen project he is preparing, reports Variety.
“Passing Strange” opened in February at the Belasco Theatre
and won critics over, receiving seven Tony Award nominations and a win for best
book for co-creator and star Stew (Mark Stewart).
Despite such critical success, the musical did not attract
the large numbers of theatergoers needed to stay open and will close on July
20.
Spike Lee will film the July 19 production with a live
audience, as well as two other performances without audiences.
“Passing Strange” tells the tale of a young black musician
who sets on a journey to find the meaning of life.
The rock musical also received the New York Drama Critics'
Circle Award for best musical, as well as three Drama Desk Awards, for
outstanding musical, outstanding music
and outstanding lyrics.
“’Passing Strange’ has been an unparalleled experience for
me as a lifelong theatre lover,” producer Elizabeth Ireland McCann said, as
quoted by Playbill.com. “I cannot express how genuinely proud I am of the show,
the brilliant creators, the fantastic cast, the band and every member of the Passing
Strange family.”
She added, “We brought a show to Broadway and, at the very
least, shook things up a bit.”
Spike Lee said he wanted “to do some things that have not
been tried.”
He is best known for movies such as “Malcolm X” and “Do the
Right Thing.” His next film to be released is “Miracle at St. Anna,” a World
War II drama that focuses on an all-black US army division. Lee directed from
a script he wrote himself based on a novel by James McBride.
