Spider-Man to Be Released Next Year on Broadway

Spider-Man has taken control of the big and little screens, animated and non-animated productions. Now, it’s the superhero’s turn to take over Broadway with a hand from Julie Taymor and rock band U2.

The play’s producers announced on Tuesday that “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is scheduled to debut on February 18, 2010, at the Hilton Theatre. In addition, preview performances are due to kick off on January 16 next year.

The musical, which is under the helm of Julie Taymor, is said to feature a score by Bono and The Edge, two members of U2.

Julie Taymor, who served as the resourceful and inspired force behind “The Lion King,” Disney’s long-running production, which is now in its second decade on Broadway, will co-write the “Spider-Man” book together with Glen Berger.

The tale was obviously inspired by the Marvel comic books hero and is due to include the story of Spider-Man’s beginning along with some fresh material.
Nevertheless, no casting was made public.

Among the members of the show’s production team are set designer George Tsypin, who helped make the sets for “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway; Eiko Ishioka, who will create the costumes; Donald Holder of “The Lion King,” who will have power over the lighting; Daniel Ezralow, choreography, as well as sound designer Jonathan Deans, who has contributed to various Cirque du Soleil shows.

The Spider-Man musical is produced by Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment/David Maisel, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Jeremiah Harris.
