After the UCLA Medical Center scandal, when
127 workers read without permission celebrity medical records, including
records belonging to Farrah Fawcett, Britney Spears, Maria Shriver (Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wife), it’s time for a new privacy breach.
The incident happened last month at Sparrow Hospital
in Michigan. According
to the Detroit Free Press, an unspecified number of employees were fired or
disciplined for trying to access Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s (D) computerized
medical information. The 49-year-old Democratic governor was admitted for emergency
surgery at the Sparrow
Hospital to remove an
intestinal obstruction.
“We had no knowledge of this; we were as
surprised as anyone,” Granholm’s spokesperson Liz Boyd said, adding that such
issues are “very serious.” The privacy breach was discovered during a routine
audit.
Representatives for the hospital said that
employees are required to sign a statement that they will not violate the
hospital’s privacy policies. The statement issued by Sparrow Senior VP Joe Ruth
says that all employees take patient privacy very seriously and have procedures
in place to protect health information of all patients, and assured that “appropriate
disciplinary actions are taken” if employees violate privacy codes.
The hospital didn’t say how many employees
were fired or disciplined for peeking at the Governor’s medical records. They
said the incident was an internal personnel matter.
The privacy of medical records is protected
under the state and federal laws.
