Computer game designer Richard Garriott is literally back on
Earth, following a 10-day space visit.
Space Adventures Ltd., the commercial company that
facilitated Richard Garriott’s trip to the International Space Station,
announced on Friday that he had arrived safely in Kazakhstan,
after a space journey aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft, along with
Expedition 17 Russian crewmembers Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko, who had spent
199 days in orbit.
Richard Garriott, the son of NASA astronaut Owen Garriott,
became the first man to follow in his parent’s footsteps on an
extra-terrestrial mission.
“This mission to the ISS fulfilled a lifelong dream to
experience spaceflight as my father first did 35 years ago; it’s an honor to be
the first American to follow a parent into space,” the computer game developer
said in a statement.
Following a training process with Space Adventures in Russia,
Richard Garriott left for space aboard the Soyuz TMA-13 on October 12. The
capsule was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan
and Garriott was accompanied by Expedition 18 crewmembers Mike Fincke and Yuri
Lonchakov. The tourist and the astronauts arrived at the space station a couple
of days after their departure from Earth.
In spite of the fact that everything went according to plan
and no evident problems had been signaled, the crew had to undergo a standard
medical checkup subsequent to its landing.
Richard Garriott paid over $30 million for his expedition,
which made him the sixth space tourist, following Dennis Tito, Mark
Shuttleworth, Gregory Olsen, Anousheh Ansari and Charles Simonyi.
He explained in a statement that this experience proved to
him that any dream can come true if you believe in it and make the most of your
will to achieve it.
“Growing up in an astronaut family, I firmly believed that
every person could go to space, and now I have. I took this opportunity to
inspire them with my adventure and let them know they can achieve their wildest
dreams as well with hard work and perseverance,” he said.
