Don Cornelius, the septuagenarian creator and former host of
television show “Soul Train,” was arrested Friday in Los
Angeles on suspicion of domestic violence, authorities
said Saturday.
The former longtime host of “Soul Train” was taken to Van
Nuys jail late Friday after police were called to his Hollywood Hills home. The
details of the incident remain for the moment unknown.
Arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence, it
remains unknown who his alleged victim was. Someone reported a domestic
incident, Officer Sam Park told the Associated Press. Cornelius was released on
$50,000 bail and is due in court next month, on Nov. 14.
At 72, Cornelius is famous for having created “Soul Train”
in 1970, which he produced through his own production company. His iconic show,
which he hosted from inception until 1993, featured such legendary artists as
Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White.
The seminal series was so warmly received and became so
influential that it led to the development of a franchise which includes Soul
Train Music Awards, the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and the Soul Train
Christmas Starfest.
