Sony, one of the world’s largest device manufacturers, is recalling approximately 100,000 flawed laptop batteries that have the nasty habit of overheating, causing damage either to the device or even to the surrounding environment.
Unfortunately, the overheating problems don’t affect only Sony’s Vaio laptops but also other brands that use the same batteries. Among the laptops affected by the manufacturing flaw are also HP laptops, Dell and Toshiba.
Because of the overheating issues Sony took back last month approximately 430,000 Vaio laptops, this problem affecting their sales in a pretty harsh manner. Sony announced that the problems are mainly caused by factory changes and problems with raw materials. Even so, some wonder how were the defective batteries tested before getting out on the market and in people’s computers.
Because there have been reports about the batteries overheating, damaging the devices they were supposedly powering and even starting small fires, or creating small flames, Sony has voluntarily recalled approximately 65,000 batteries worldwide, while the US government recalled, because of safety issues, another 35,000 units. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Sony deals with these kind of problems as in 2006 it had to recall, at a cost of $360 million, approximately 9,6 million defective batteries. The decision of the US Safety commission to recall the flawed batteries affects 32,000 HP laptops, 3,000 Toshiba computers and 150 from Dell.
Even with these problems, Sony doesn’t feel the consequences on a financial plan, the company gaining on the stock market 3.5 percent.
