Few analysts thought this would happen, but Amazon’s Kindle 2 will have to face fierce competition on its market. The electronic readers market is currently dominated by the Kindle, but the recently-struck deal between Sony and Google surely gave Amazon a few nightmares.
Through the deal with Google, the Sony Reader Digital Book will be much more attractive when it comes to the number of ebooks available for download. The deal with Google, which has been scanning books and turning them into ebooks since 2004, boosts the number of ebooks available for the Sony Reader to about 600,000, and they’re free. Wow! I said the same thing when I heard the Kindle offers access to about 250,000 titles, so I guess this time should be a double Wow!
Since 2004, Google managed to scan about 7,000,000 books for its Google Book Search project. However, the books it offered Sony under the current deal are those whose copyrights have expired. So, basically, most of those titles are publications before 1923, according to a report from The New York Times. Until other books are added to the eBook Store, avid ebook readers can enjoy some classic literature.
Users of the Sony Reader are just one button away from the Sony eBook Store which awaits them with 600,000 ebooks for download at not cost. To download ebooks form the Sony eBook Store, one must first of all have an account. You can download the ebooks on the Sony Reader, but if you do not have one, the text can be read through Sony's free eBook Library software on a PC running Windows.
