Sony Computer Entertainment presented on the company’s official PlayStation blog the details of its latest firmware update developed for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console.
The update is called v2.60 and even though it does not bring anything extraordinary, it introduces several feature additions which were designed to boost the appeal of the console’s media capabilities.
Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations, explained that the key feature is the new Photo Gallery application, which provides a series of tools to help users sort out and display their digital photo collections. “Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria,” he continued, “including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured.” According to the presentation, the above mentioned criteria for organizing the pictures includes the number, the age and even the facial expressions of the people photographed.
Users will also be able to create slideshows with music and individual photo playlists with the help of an easy-to-use interface. Other features of the update include guest browsing through the PlayStation Network’s storefront and also support for DivX 3.11.
Once the update will be downloaded, users will have to install it by accessing the Photo section of their console’s main XMB.
The company’s blog includes a demo video presentation of the new software. For now, the release date is still uncertain, but as Lempel announced, it will happen soon.
