The Playstation Home is an interesting concept, as it creates a virtual world for the user, allowing him to personalize everything. PLaystation users can create an avatar that fits their real world image and attitude the best and chose an apartment, which can be decorated and equipped according to taste.
Alter egos can interact with one another, visit other user’s virtual apartments and even buy some items that will not be free of charge. Many may point out that the concept is not at all original, as the Wii also has available avatars for the user to create, called Mii, and even Xbox Live has chosen the path of creating a virtual community, where the user has the option to represent him or herself through avatars.
“Home” is still in beta form, even if it’s now available to the public. A reason for this is that the service will be continuously improved based on careful observation and on the public’s reaction to the service.
The difference between “Home” and what the Wii or Xbox has to offer is very noticeable when looking how well the virtual world is defined. Sony offers a truly huge virtual world, with as much variety as there are users. “Home” is designed to be incredibly entertaining, and it should be, considering how many changes the world can support.
On the other hand, even though the PS1 and PS2 have been the best selling game consoles of all time, the shiny PS3 is not doing so well, as people don’t seem that interested in blu-ray formats and are definitely not into the console’s spicy price tag.
