Monday was Williams sisters’
day, as they both managed to go further in the Sony Ericsson Open, joining
rival and world number one Justine Henin in the quarterfinals of the
competition.
Everyone eagerly awaits the
confrontation between French and U.S. Open champion Henin and Serena William,
after last year in Miami the Belgian tennis player lost to Serena. This will be
the 13th time the two will meat on court.
The quarterfinalists of the Sony
Ericsson Open were decided after a 6-3 6-3 victory from defending champion
Serena Williams against Kaia Kanepi and 6-2 6-2 victory from Henin against Elena
Vesnina of Russia.
Another confrontation of the quarterfinals
will bring together Venus Williams, who beat 17-year-old Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3 and world number four Svetlana
Kuznetsova, who ensured a further place in the competition after winning 7-6
6-3 against Shahar Peer, 16th seeder.
Henin is looking forward to the
chance of a rematch against the defending champion, as she remembered last year’s
encounter: “It was the day that I understood that I could win against Serena,
and that I could do it in grand slams three times in the same year,” said Henin
according to the CNN.
Serena knows Henin is decided to
put up a good match against her: “(Henin) tends to play really well against me –
probably better against me than other opponents. So it’s definitely a good
match for me,” said Williams in an interview with the same newspaper.
In the other encounters of the
quarterfinals, Serbian Jelena Jankovic will meet Elena Dementieva of Russia,
while another Russian, Vera Zvonavera, will meet Dinara Safina, also of Russia.
It wasn’t such a good end of the
week for Lindsay Davenport, the 32 seeder trying to regain her shape after last
year’s comeback, as she lost to Russian Dinara Safina, 13th seeder 6-3 6-4. It seems
that not every day is a good day for tennis, but Davenport said she hopes for
the best in the future.
