It seems that the global financial slowdown is affecting one big company after another, as mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson has revealed some figures that point out that the company is not doing so well.
Sony Ericsson has managed to sell 6.6 million fewer phones than during the same period in 2007 and this unavoidably led to some big profit losses. The company made a net loss of €187 million and even though the end of the year holiday shopping season would have been a way out of this crisis, fewer phones were sold than it was predicted.
Sony Ericsson has blamed the world economic crisis for its loss of profits and is optimistic about managing to withstand this horrible period.
Analysts predict some great difficulties for the major mobile phone manufacturer, especially in the first 6 months of 2009. Sony Ericsson is determined to cut costs in order to remain on the floating line, and besides the elimination of 2,000 jobs it announced in July it will also try to cut costs by a further €180 million each year. Sony Ericsson will also launch a new high-end mobile phone that will use Google’s Android operating system.
There are no details about the new Sony Ericsson phone, but it will certainly help the company out, as Android devices are very popular and quite trendy. The new phone will have to make good use of all of its features, with a particular focus on music, imaging and Internet.
